What is BGP?
The
Border Gateway
Protocol
(BGP)
is the core routing protocol of the Internet. It
maintains a table of IP networks or 'prefixes'
which designate network reachability among
autonomous Systems (AS). It is described as a
path vector protocol. BGP does not use
traditional IGP metrics, but makes routing
decisions based on path, network policies and/or
rule sets.
Here's
the basic idea: The internet
is comprised of independent
networks called autonomous
systems. Each autonomous system
is self-governing as far as
information exchange within the
system. To communicate outside
the autonomous system, each has
at least one exterior gateway,
which links to other autonomous
systems. The Border Gateway
Protocol (BGP) determines which
route packets take when sent
between nodes in separate
autonomous systems. Each
exterior gateway advertises its
routing information to other
autonomous systems and keeps a
routing table of the entire
internet. BGP determines the
best routes based on various
attributes, including weight,
origin, and next hop.

How and Why Do We Do This?
We offer four paths to the internet, on
four different loops, from three different
providers, from two different access points into
our building. Even if 1,2 or even 3 loops fails
your connection stay up. No single point of
failure. This is truly fully backed up. Does
your data center provider do this? Our Las
Vegas Collocation Facility has all the advanced
technology to support full "never down", fully
secured and managed network data.
